Committing to Philly Achilles
Melissa Wilcox is a Cigna employee. In 2012, she was inspired to start the Philadelphia Chapter of Achilles International after guiding a visually-impaired athlete during the Disney World Half Marathon. Melissa’s commitment to form the Philadelphia chapter has paid off; the chapter continues to grow and provides athletes with disabilities with an avenue for becoming physically fit.
Today “Philly Achilles” is made up of a diverse group of athletes with disabilities and over 60 dedicated volunteers who travel from all over the Delaware Valley and New Jersey to participate in group workouts and support the chapter’s growing number of athletes. The non-profit group pairs athletes with disabilities with compassionate trained guides who place an emphasis on safety to ensure that members reach their optimal fitness potential. Since the inception of the Philadelphia chapter in 2012, the organization has completed numerous races from 5Ks to marathons. When one athlete succeeds at achieving a milestone, all succeed!
While the physical fitness aspect is the most obvious, Philly Achilles builds self-esteem and promotes team camaraderie. This Philadelphia-based organization provides encouragement, support, friendship, and bountiful inspiration.
Philly Achilles is always looking for new members to join in the fitness and fun! Whether you or someone you know has a disability, or you would like to volunteer your time while getting fit, this is the perfect opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals in the community. We invite you to join us at Two Liberty Place at 9am on Saturday mornings. Please email Melissa for more details!
Cigna has participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters “Behind School Walls” program since 2006. They were the first company in the Philadelphia area to engage in this new program. Cigna averages about 20-25 matches between volunteered adults and children. Volunteers and children meet in the 2LP Café roughly biweekly, at lunchtime. They also have one or two “Reverse Days” during a school year when Cigna volunteers visit the children at William Dick School located in Philadelphia, PA.
For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. They develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

Sand Sculpture Spectacular at The Shops at Liberty Place
World-renowned sculptors transformed the Rotunda at The Shops at Liberty Place into a 40-ton sand sculpture spectacular with hand-carved scenes commemorating Parkway 100, the centennial celebration of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
The Parkway 100 Celebration
The Benjamin Franklin Parkway, one of the finest examples of bold civic planning in the United States, is celebrating its Centennial (“Parkway 100”), 2017-2018. Plans for a grand “Fairmount Parkway” date back to 1892. Ground was broken for the massive project in 1907, and in 1917, Philadelphia’s leaders formally adopted French urban planner Jacques Gréber’s Parkway design, emulating the Champs-Élysées in Paris. On October 26, 1918, the Parkway was officially open to traffic end-to-end. In 1937, the name of the Fairmount Parkway was changed to honor the city’s most celebrated citizen, Benjamin Franklin.
The Shops at Liberty Place, located in the atrium between One and Two Liberty Place, feature 50 shops, services, restaurants, cafes, and more…a multi-level mini-mall at your doorstep!
